Thai Islands: Koh Samui

Oh my goodness it's been so long! I've had such a blogging dry spell because of Uni work, it's ridiculous. I've missed blogging so much and although I should probably be reading right now, I would much rather pretend I was back in Thailand ;)

From Koh Phi Phi, we got a ferry to to Krabi, where we had to stay for the night and get a bus and ferry to Koh Samui the next day. The main thing to remember in Thailand is that EVERYONE is a salesman, we made the mistake of telling our taxi driver we didn't have ferry tickets for the next day, so he was on it straight away and we didn't really have time to look around for prices. Literally everything you do, somebody will try to sell you something. As soon as we arrived in Phuket, our bus to the hotel actually took us to a tourist information centre where they tried to sell us all sorts of day trips and awful elephant shows. My main tip is to have an idea of what you are doing beforehand so you don't get dragged in, or be a really good actor and pretend.

Our accommodation in Koh Samui wasn't particularly great (we were kinda slumming it at this point), but it wasn't the worst we had been in. However, as soon as the guy who showed us our room left, I found a MASSIVE spider in the bathroom. Then after that we found two cockroaches in the room. That night was battle of the bugs and we weren't the most confident sleeping in there after that.

Koh Samui is known as the honeymooner island, and therefore everywhere is pretty expensive, especially restaurant wise. Luckily we found a restaurant we really loved, which we just kept going back to everyday for lunch and dinner. It still wasn't the cheapest, but it was a lot better than the 5 star famous chef restaurants along the same street. We LOVED the food, especially the shrimp cakes. OMG I think about these shrimp cakes all the time, they were just so so so beautiful with amazing flavours. They were just the right amount of heat that I can handle with a taste of lime and I need to stop talking about them now but just look at them. They also did really good cocktails so that helped too.

We visited Big Buddha Temple and Wat Plai Laem on the same day. The Big Buddha is a 12m high golden Buddha surrounded by a small courtyard of buildings at the base where you can buy something to eat or borrow some appropriate clothing (I came to have a real love for temples that let you borrow shawls, it's so much easier than wearing long clothing all day long). There is then a large staircase to the Buddha, which is decorated with beautiful colourful dragons. We had a great time ringing all the bells that surround the Buddha on the higher level.

Wat Plai Laem is probably the coolest Buddhist temple ever. It's a modern temple with an 18 arm statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of compassion and also a large laughing Budai. I thought this temple was just awesome, it was all outside and surrounded by a pond with the biggest fish I have ever seen in my life. We couldn't get a picture of the fish because they were so fast, but watching them come up for food the tourists were feeding them was crazy. They were so big, I am still in awe thinking back on them. It is easy to walk from Big Buddha to Wat Plai Laem, but if you can only fit in one temple I would definitely say go to this one and I think the pictures explain why. A visit to this temple made the visit to Koh Samui for me. You get 'templed out' pretty quickly on a trip around Asia, a completely unique temple is hard to come by, this one is the one.

So that was Koh Samui, next up will be Koh Tao hopefully up next week... I will try my best lovelies, thank you for all your continued support

The photo on the left looks way too cool and like a travel instagram photo, so I had to include this one which is a lot more like me
